This is Athens supported SAS - Scandinavian Airlines’ “Destination Unknown” initiative which earlier this month offered the chance to SAS frequent flyers, senior executives and media representatives to embark on a “mystery” trip to Athens. “Destination Unknown” provides travelers with the opportunity to explore the concept of flying to an unknown destination and join a unique adventure curated by SAS. Two hundred lucky passengers had the chance to travel to Athens and explore the city through carefully curated tours to landmark sites, exclusive experiences and many surprises. The City of Athens, Greece is building strong ties with the Chinese tourism market. Earlier this month, executives of the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency traveled to Shanghai, China, to take part in a B2B event titled “Bridging cultures in Travel: From Asia to Greece”, which was organized to mark the launch by Juneyao Airlines Co., Ltd. of a new direct flight connecting Athens with Shanghai. Meanwhile, This is Athens held a press trip for a group of selected media representatives from the Chinese market, who arrived in Athens with Juneyao’s inaugural flight. The two-day trip offered participants the chance to discover Athens’ great potential as an ideal tourism destination as well as to experience the city’s cultural heritage, culinary scene, landmark sites and unique seaside locations including the Athens Riviera and the Vouliagmeni Lake. The press trip generated significant media coverage and awareness. The This is Athens - City Festival returns for its 3rd edition, starting on May 1st and until June 2nd 2024. The City of Athens’ great spring celebration will host 250 events and activities throughout the city. The festival’s events aim to take visitors on a tour beyond the city's landmark sites to lesser-known neighborhoods, unexpected locations, “hidden” parks, squares and museums. This goes hand in hand with the City’s tourism strategy which aims to showcase Athens’ diverse cultural heritage, support tourism business activity and improve the quality of life of its residents. This is Athens took part in the Sustainable Tourism Course focusing on the Destination,which was held by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) in Athens, between 28-29 March. During the event, the team of This is Athens presented the strategic plan of the City of Athens, Greece for the sustainable tourism development of the Greek capital. The Course aimed to provide Greek tourism professionals with information on the GSTC sustainability criteria and the global standards for sustainability in travel and tourism, as well as to discuss best practices and tools for businesses and destinations. As a proud destination-member of the GSTC since 2021 (through the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency) the City of Athens has completed the GSTC evaluation process with excellent results. Following Athens’ meeting, This is Athens will represent the Greek capital in GSTC’s upcoming 2024 Global Sustainable Tourism Conference, scheduled to take place in Stockholm, Sweden, from April 23-26. #CityofAthens #ThisisAthens #ThisisAthensCVB #GSTC

Athens looks forward to building strong tourism ties with Shanghai, China, through the launch, on April 2, of the first direct flight between the two cities, operated by Juneyao Airlines Co., Ltd.. The CEO of the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency, giannis georgizas and the team of This is Athens recently traveled to China’s largest city to participate in a B2B event titled “Bridging cultures in Travel: From Asia to Greece”, which was organized especially for the occasion by the HELLAS GROUP and My Odyssey Travel in the Hellas House. The event aimed to promote Greece as a top destination to a selected group of leading travel agents in the Chinese market. It was held with the participation of the Athens International Airport (AIA) and representatives of the Athenian tourism market. This is Athens had the chance to showcase the multiple tourism advantages of the Greek capital as well as to hold one-on-one meetings with Chinese tourism professionals. Athens is proud to participate in the first “AI Opener for Destinations” programme, which was recently launched by GROUP NAO. Athens was one of the first destinations to join the programme in early 2024. Today, “AI Opener for Destinations” counts 59 Programme Partners from the EU and the US. Participants represent destinations as well as tourism organisations that wish to explore the potential and challenges of AI. The program also offers participants the opportunity to learn more about the reskilling and upskilling solutions that are available in the workplace. The year-long programme includes thematic workshops and educational sessions which aim to explore the different ways that AI affects and challenges destinations worldwide. Heads up! The second annual WOW - Women of the World Festival Athens edition - the international festival for women, femininities and non-binary people - will take place at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) from 6-8 April. WOW is organized by the SNFCC in collaboration with the WOW Foundation. Last year's event was a hit, as it attracted over 3,600 visitors.
